In a new piece of news, Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Chet Holmgren will miss the 2022-23 season due to a Lisfranc injury to his right leg, the team announced on Thursday.
LeBron James was injured while defending on a sharp break. Thunder General Sam Presti said in a statement.
Chet has a long career in our organization and within the Oklahoma City community. What impressed us the most during the selection process was his determination and focus. Perseverance will take them through it.
As a period of time we work together and support him during his rehabilitation, Presti told reporters during an availability session later on Thursday that Holmgren had foot surgery when three in the country of the Thunder.
Presti confirmed that Holmgren had suffered a torn tendon in his leg and not a fracture, noting that the Thunder were optimistic about his long-term recovery but would be extremely conservative. Holmgren has already resumed weight training and shooting practice without straining his foot.
Holmgren’s size was a subject of constant debate during his lone season at Gonzaga, and in the weeks leading up to the draft, critics questioned whether his 7-foot-1 195-pound frame would be the physical stiffness of NBA basketball.
Presti insisted that the contact injury had nothing to do with Holmgren’s size. Presti said he’s going to get better just by learning the NBA, getting stronger and seeing things differently. That would be what he would be able to shoot.
James Jason Tatum, along with No. 1 pick Paolo Banchero DeJonte Murray and Aaron Gordon, Holmgren was one of several NBA players who competed in the Pro-Am. The game was canceled in the second quarter due to unusual court conditions in Seattle. The sultry rush often results in wet spots and condensation, which accompanies hot days.
Presti said he does not consider condensation to be a factor in Holmgren’s injury. People are playing everywhere, everywhere, everywhere, Presti said. If you have players who love to play they are going to play basketball every time. Something like this can happen when you step on a basketball court.
It can happen in a game. This can happen in an exercise. It can happen in melee. The NBA considers Pro Am a sanctioned activity which means that if Holmgren is unable to fully recover from the injury, his future earnings will not be at risk.
The Thunder will receive an insurance reimbursement of 80% of Holmgren’s per-game salary of approximately $4 million if he does not play 41 games this coming season. Will not inspire as some fans have suggested.
He said we just have to focus on what we can control and I think we have a bunch of people who will keep getting better in the long run but we’re still going up the mountain in the Western Conference, They said.
We will have to see where he goes with an average of 14.0 points and 8.4 rebounds. Presti said Thursday that Holmgren was having a scorching heat and would have the strength to adjust when he returns to the Thunder. Or even reaching MVP-caliber level.
Ben Simmons suffered a leg injury, and the following season he dropped to No. Blake Griffin was the top selector in 2009, but had to sit down while recovering from a knee injury, as did No. 1 selection Greg Oden.
Current NBA scoring champion Joel Embiid was the No. 3 pick in 2014 and missed his first two seasons with foot problems. Nerlens Noel was the No. 6 pick in 2013 and had his first season with a knee problem.
Michael Porter Jr. was the 14th pick in the 2018 draft and missed the upcoming season with a back injury, Presti said on Thursday when asked about Holmgren’s long-term outlook.
