Naked photo of Tommy Lee on Instagram sparks debate over platform’s double standards of censorship

Rocker Tommy Lee’s penis is once available for public viewing, but this time it looks to be of his choice. The 59-year-old Motley Fool drummer posted a full-front nude photo on Instagram and Facebook on Thursday.

A picture of a naked Lee sitting on the side of a bathtub has been removed from social media platforms. However, it is not clear whether he or the social media sites took the picture.

When the post was online, Lee’s wife, Brittany Furlan, commented on the photo with “oh my god.” According to Newsweek, Lee’s nude photo remained online for about four hours.

This resulted in outrage from those who called for a double standard with the meta-owned social media platform’s community guidelines. Instagram’s Community Guidelines prohibit content showing close-ups of sexual intercourse, genitals, and completely naked buttocks.

We know that there are times when people want to share nude images that are artistic or creative in nature, but for a variety of reasons, we don’t allow nudity on Instagram.

Instagram now allows nudity for the purpose of protest and nudity in photographs and sculptures for photos of women’s nipples, giving birth and post-birth health conditions, as well as in pictures and sculptures.

The removal of Lee’s nude photo sparked outrage on Twitter with questions about why it took so long to remove it. As user @lovefromloz said, didn’t really want to wake up to the picture of Tommy Lee.

@instagram literally has the most obvious double standards in their community guidelines.
